The Adventure Continues: The London to Sydney Air Race 2001

Like its historic predecessors, the London to Sydney Centenary Air Race 2001 covered 12,000 miles and more than two dozen stops along the way. Beginning in England and traveling eastward, its participants competed in two categories: speed racers and precision flying. Thirty-eight teams from Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States entered the race.

The aircraft included single and twin-engine planes from several manufacturers, the Albatross Miss Nancy seaplane and a Robinson 44 helicopter. Two women pilots, Barbara Gard and Gwen Bloomingdale, lost their lives in a crash off the coast of Iceland on their way to England for the flag-off. Six planes later withdrew, and 31 completed the journey.

The photos from this historic race have been compiled into a coffee table book entitled The Adventure Continues. We invite you to learn more about the race, the book and to preview photos in the gallery pages of this site.
